The half plate size (6.50 x 4.25 inches) was intended to be used on a tripod. Focusing and composition depended on the viewing screen which could be swung aside to allow the plate holder to be inserted.

The half plate example shown incorporates vertical lens shift, a swing back and triple extension of the bellows. The lens is a 8.75" Beck Double Aplanat f7.7 with a Unicum shutter.
